But the fact is, he made Athena something, which meant Ryuko would probably be suspicious. He isn't some dumb shounen hero so he takes the next available step.

From it's design, it's made to fit on the left arm, cover a decently large area (like a buckler), but leaves the hand free to grasp what it needs to. It looks kind of like this. Wear this on your left arm and take attacks here. You'll still be able to wield your sword with both hands so it shouldn't interfere with your style. I know your armor is unique but there is nothing wrong with having a sturdy backup that enemies can't plan for.
Save yourself some anger and don't thank me. Instead, focus on those you need to protect. It's easier like that.
